Oregon Senate Outlaws ‘Revenge Porn’

Oregon Senate Outlaws Revenge PornThe Oregon State Senate unanimously passed a bill that outlaws so called “revenge porn” yesterday. It moves to the House where passage is also expected and eventually signed into law.

The bill outlaws the public sharing of any sexually explicit media online without the consent of the person pictured. Very often the media is posted by the ex-partner of the person pictured in the attempt to shame, embarrass, or humiliate them, or in the case of celebrities and other public figures to profit from the exposure.

So far sixteen states have laws applicable to revenge porn and the number is growing. Experts in the field of criminal sexual misconduct consider revenge porn as type of sexual abuse.

Laws against revenge porn are also being enacted internationally including England, Wales, and Israel.
