The Maryland State Department of Education has released a list of nearly 400 teachers who’ve had their teaching licenses revoked for inappropriate behavior. The list of offenses ranges from child sex abuse to alcohol and drug issues.
While the publication of the database is noteworthy, it has not been received with unanimous praise. According to a local media outlet, “’For many years, the County was simply covering up, moving, covering up and moving suspected and sometimes even known child abusers,’ said Janis Sartucci of the Parents’ Coalition of Montgomery County. The 397 on this list may not reveal the extent of the problem. WUSA9 learned the County has an unknown number of teachers under restrictions, based on previous conduct. They’re limited in their interactions with children, but kept in the classroom.”
